{"id":17668,"date":"2020-11-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-26T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gruppofabbri.com\/westaways-and-nature-fresh-win-2020-uk-packaging-awards\/"},"modified":"2023-03-29T13:05:38","modified_gmt":"2023-03-29T11:05:38","slug":"westaways-and-nature-fresh-win-2020-uk-packaging-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gruppofabbri.com\/en\/westaways-and-nature-fresh-win-2020-uk-packaging-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Westaways and Nature Fresh win 2020 UK Packaging Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another important award within our Nature Fresh project has been reached\u00a0thanks to the\u00a0fervent activity of our\u00a0<strong>UK<\/strong>\u00a0office and Michele Govoni even during the first\u00a0lockdown period this year.<\/p>\n<p>Our UK client\u00a0<strong>Westaway Sausages<\/strong>\u00a0has just been awarded with the\u00a0<strong>2020 UK Packaging Awards<\/strong>,\u00a0with its 100% compostable packaging for sausages being recognised\u00a0as &#8220;<strong>Innovation of the Year<\/strong>&#8220;!<\/p>\n<p>This packaging includes Nature Fresh film wrapping.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the\u00a0Company\u00a0has been shortlisted as one of five finalists &#8211; including four goliaths of pork, beef and poultry processing in the UK &#8211; for the\u00a0Meat, Poultry and Seafood Manufacturing Company of the Year\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>Food Manufacturer Excellence Awards<\/strong>. This major award will be announced next February, so&#8230; fingers\u00a0crossed!!<\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s the whole story:\u00a0Westaways is a\u00a0family owned Devon company\u00a0that\u00a0produces up to 250,000 fresh, frozen, and fully cooked sausages a day\u00a0from fresh British pork.\u00a0They supply retailers, wholesalers, and business users throughout the UK and have an ever-growing export business.<\/p>\n<p>Its Owner and\u00a0Managing Director,\u00a0Charles Baughan, is deeply committed in\u00a0reducing plastic waste:\u00a0&#8220;Plastic is an incredible material, but it has a legacy that we can no longer ignore. We must all make changes;\u00a0<strong>our changes will help others to change<\/strong>. Walk down a meat or dairy aisle in any supermarket, and you will see that just about every product is wrapped in plastic. Plastic film, including cling film, makes up roughly a third of all the plastic packaging used in the UK each year and the majority ends up in\u00a0landfill.\u00a0<strong>Our wrapping (i.e. Nature Fresh)\u00a0is different<\/strong>. It is a\u00a0<strong>compostable bioplastic\u00a0<\/strong>that will fully disintegrate without leaving any microplastic traces.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To create their certified compostable packaging, Westaways spent\u00a0<strong>three years<\/strong>\u00a0trialling\u00a0materials to replace the plastic tray. This led to them using a\u00a0<strong>card tray<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>and sleeve<\/strong>\u00a0made from\u00a0sustainably sourced\u00a0<strong>wood pulp<\/strong>. The film overwrap came by Westaways working closely with\u00a0Fabbri Group:\u00a0<strong>Nature Fresh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>the world&#8217;s first<\/strong>\u00a0bioplastic compostable cling film made for automatic packaging worldwide.\u00a0<strong>All the packaging, including the cling film, can be put in your food waste bin or can be home composted<\/strong>\u00a0where it will convert into CO<sub>2<\/sub>, water, and biomass, ready to spread on your vegetable patch.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s how today a\u00a0small\u00a0company from the heart of\u00a0Devon\u00a0is\u00a0celebrating after winning\u00a0<em>Innovation of the Year<\/em>\u00a0at the 2020 UK Packaging Awards for its unique eco-friendly packaging.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Baughan\u00a0commented: &#8220;We knew we were doing the right thing in challenging the need for producers to use plastic trays wrapped in films that cannot easily be recycled. There are\u00a0<strong>over 400 million packs<\/strong>\u00a0of meat products sold in the UK every year packed this way. I hope this\u00a0<strong>ground-breaking innovation<\/strong>\u00a0by our small team will<strong>\u00a0challenge the whole sector<\/strong>.
