We believe that the packaging industry has a key role to play in protecting the environment and preventing food waste.
Ever since our company was founded, in the postwar period – when resources were extremely precious and Mr. Ennio Fabbri began wrapping oranges – our motto, core value and ultimate goal has always been to "preserve without waste".
We work with fresh produce processors and retailers by providing solutions covering all food sectors (meat, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, fish, delicatessen products, etc.): for this reason, we are committed to offering safe, competitive and effective products on a daily basis, ensuring that food is adequately preserved and investing in innovative solutions with the aim of continuously improving our sustainability performance.
It is a commitment on several levels.
We invest around 5% of our annual turnover in R&D and are always actively engaged in research and experimentation in order to:
• Produce increasingly thinner and lighter films
• Reduce dependence on non-renewable sources and start using materials from renewable sources
• Develop low energy consumption packaging machines designed to reduce film consumption
In line with the principles set out in the recent "European Strategy for Plastics", Fabbri Group, which has a strong focus on innovation and waste reduction, has decided to adopt an ecologically compatible strategy to reduce plastic pollution, which also involves investing in compostable solutions.
We have recently added two new solutions to our film portfolio, which allow the food industry and retailers to meet the growing market demand for sustainable solutions:
• BIOBASED STAR FILM
Stretch film made from over 30% renewable raw materials of plant origin, "OK Biobased®" certified by TÜV Austria
• NATURE FRESH
The first film to be certified as home compostable (TÜV Austria) and industrial compostable (TÜV Austria, European Bioplastics, CIC) in accordance with the UNI EN 13432 standard for automatic packaging, also suitable for manual packaging.
Nature Fresh addresses the root of the problem of the film which, after use, is contaminated by food: this means that the film cannot be recycled and will end up in the incinerator. This is not the case with Nature Fresh, since this film can be composted together with the food that it was wrapped around for protection.
Fabbri Group is the only company in the industry to manufacture not only packaging machines but also food-grade, neutral and printed films.
This unique combination allows it to offer a versatile, complete packaging solution that meets all production requirements as well as being cost-effective and having a lower environmental impact.
Fabbri Group’s automatic wrapping machines were conceived and have been optimised for use with stretch film, offering the following advantages:
• Higher production yield even in "extreme" packaging situations, such as high speed, significant stretching, frequent changes in tray size or in the weight of the wrapped product
• Drastically reduced emergency and routine maintenance operations on packaging machines, with significant advantages such as savings on spare parts, reduced waste from maintenance activities, and lower environmental impact since technicians do not need to travel as much
Our "Elixa" packaging system, which was patented at the time, is now one of the most widely used packaging systems for fresh foodstuffs and ensures maximum extensibility of the film, which allows us to save as much consumable material as possible. Our tray sealers in the XPEED and CAVECO ranges, instead, can handle "skin" packaging for trays and other types of products made from either conventional or compostable materials.
Fabbri Group has always been committed to limiting the environmental impact of its film, paying special attention to the raw materials used and to internal recycling.
Fabbri Group recycles 100% of production waste during the production process itself (>99%), relying on specialist external partners for the remaining part.
We are members of CONAI, the National Packaging Consortium, whose aim is to recover and recycle as much packaging material as possible.
We also have a rather sophisticated separate waste collection system in place at our offices.
• ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System)
We decided to get our film production plant in Vignola certified in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard in 2002, when sustainability issues were not getting as much attention as they are getting now from politicians, institutions, the media, companies and end consumers.
All our production facilities subsequently became part of the same certification scheme.
Our “Environmental Policy”(IT) provides us with guidance in applying and maintaining the Environmental Management System and in continuously improving performance.
• EMAS - Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/2026
An EU voluntary Eco-Management and Audit Scheme that companies and organisations can join voluntarily to evaluate and improve their environmental performance.
In order to make all interested third parties aware of its environmental performance, Fabbri Group Vignola S.p.A. annually produces its “Environmental Statement”, which is available upon request.
• OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health and Safety Management System
OHSAS 18001:2007 is the latest certification received by Fabbri Group Vignola S.p.A.
By continuously monitoring and analysing non-conformities, accidents and near misses, and in full compliance with the ever-changing current regulations, the company is committed to regularly checking and adapting its performance in terms of occupational health and safety.
In 2019, Fabbri Group and Legambiente entered into a partnership that continues to this day by participating in forums, events and conferences on environmental sustainability.
